Plains of Abraham and Samuel-De Champlain Promenade
The Battlefields Park, commonly known as the Plains of Abraham, spreads over more than a hundred hectares at the edge of Old Quebec. People run, picnic and watch the big ships sail up the river. Lower down, the Samuel-De Champlain Promenade runs along the St Lawrence with sports stations, an urban beach and basins. A date between the two, by bike or on foot, gives a fine overview of the city, far from a strict museum visit.
Montmorency Falls
About fifteen minutes from downtown, Montmorency Falls, eighty-three metres high, plunge into the St Lawrence, taller than Niagara. The park offers a cable car ride, a suspension bridge above the falls and a long staircase down. In winter, the pain de sucre, an ice cone at its base, attracts climbers. A spectacular and bracing date, to extend over a meal in the former Manoir Montmorency.
Île d’Orléans and Côte-de-Beaupré
Connected by a bridge from Quebec, Île d’Orléans is a giant orchard on the St Lawrence: strawberries, apples, blackcurrants, maple syrup and chocolate shops. You tour it by car, stopping at local producers. To the north, the Côte-de-Beaupré leads to Sainte-Anne Basilica and Mont-Sainte-Anne. On Lyad, Quebecer singles share their nature outings; it is up to you to find someone to taste the next cider with.
